The History of Alliance of Abilities

Alliance of Abilities was incorporated in 1997 with the sole purpose of founding and maintaining clubhouses in partnership with people with a traumatic brain injury or developmental disability, so they can build meaningful lives with the help of a supportive community.  An Alliance clubhouse is a safe place where the emphasis is on individual abilities instead of disabilities, where everyone is respected as a responsible adult whose hard work and commitment contribute to the smooth running of their clubhouse. Members and staff support each other in setting that encourages goal setting, personal responsibility, and self- determination. Alliances of Abilities first clubhouse is Integrity House which started in Fullerton, CA opening its doors on August 18, 1997 with 17 members. Integrity House then moved to Sunny Crest Dr. in Fullerton, CA in 2000. In 2005 Integrity House moved one more time to Santa Ana, CA. Then in 2009 Alliance of Abilities opened its seconded clubhouse in Signal Hill, CA called LOTUS House.

Agency Mission

The Alliance of Abilities is committed to serving the social, vocational, and housing needs of adults with cognitive disabilities through the establishment and support of Clubhouses based on the Fountain House Model. The Alliance respects each member’s autonomy, personal goals, and individual needs and acknowledges the valuable contribution each member makes to the overall operation of the Clubhouse and the Alliance.

Core Values

Alliance of Abilities understands that each person has an obligation to demonstrate respect for all members, staff, and visitors.  Each individual’s opinions, needs and feeling are important.  Open communication between staff and members is valued by all.  The Alliance of Abilities environment fosters trust and confidence.  This in turn facilitates friendship and heightened involvement.  The staff’s most important role is to assist members to achieve their fullest potential, thus members are encouraged to make their own decisions and to profit from their mistakes.  The ultimate goal is that members are empowered to regain control over their lives.
