Community Accessibility Project
I was looking for a project that I could do for my family, my friends, others and
myself with disabilities. I went to the city of Huntington Beach and visited City Hall. I asked
them if they had any social activates especially for people with disabilities that is accessible
and for ambulatory and non-ambulatory people. They could not provide me any resources
so instead of researching just one city I decided to research the entire county of Orange. I
talked to the DDS and CAC and they liked the idea so I come back to Integrity House and
talked to my staff and members about how we could start a project. Everyone thought the
idea was great. I asked my fellow members who would like to volunteer to be a part of the
CAP project. We stared having weekly meetings at 1:30p.m. Every Wednesday except for
the last Wednesday of the month, which was the actual day of the outing. Each meeting we
decided on which outing we would evaluate for that month. There is a maximum of 4
members that could go on each outing, so we would try to alternate members so that
everyone had a chance. We developed a survey plan, which would rate and evaluate each
place according to whether they were accessible or not. We tallied up the evaluations and
came up with an overall score and the results are presented in this booklet.

Outing Survey Results
Part 1

Restaurants
Hooters
Comments: We waited a long time for the food. Service was good but kind of
late. There was a good amount of handicapped car spaces.
Overall Score: 3.1
Norms
Comments: The restaurant was not up to par. Getting into the facility was very
difficult of wheelchairs and we were seated in the very back of the restaurant. There was
not enough room, one of the members had to be transferred to a booth in order to eat. None
of the tables were fully accessible. Average service was given. They did cut the food as
asked, but only cut up part of the meal.
Overall Score: 2
IHOP
Comments: Need more handicap parking spot.
Overall Score: 1.4
Mimi’s Café
Comments: Need more handicap parking spots (very limited). The bathroom
was accessible but cluttered.
Overall Score: 4
In & out Burger
Comments: Good service overall. Took too much time wiping down tables,
good service, need motion sensors for the restrooms but in all, the service was
adequate. Member had difficulties getting to and from distant parking lots.
Overall Score: 4.3
Red Robbin
Comments: The Restrooms would be more accessible if they had electric
doors with a push to open doors. They could design the west front with a little more
space and less walls, next to the restrooms.
Overall Score 4.5
Johns
Comments: Clean restroom and good customer service. The place was
somewhat wheelchair accessible.
Overall Score 4.6
Old Spaghetti Factory
Comments: Eddie – The waiter was awesome. We had a couple dirty glasses,
but they did change them.
Overall Score 4.7
Mario ‘s Restaurant
Comments: Waiter needed to come to our table more often to check on us.
There was a big trashcan in the handicap stall, it was inaccessible. The soap
dispenser wasn’t within reach. It needed to be placed lower and to the left. The
restrooms were wheelchair accessible.
Overall Score 4.5

Recreation
AMF Bowling
Comments: Member liked everything about it and the staff
was friendly. Restrooms were accessible, but not sanitized at
all. They have a ramp to go onto bowling lanes.
Overall Score 4
Downtown Disney
Comments: Plenty of room and a lot of space in all stores and restaurants. It
was more accessible than the Disneyland theme park. Staff was very friendly.
Parking was free for the first three hours. Additional two hours if you get your
tickle validated.
Overall Score 5
Huntington Beach
Comments: There needs to be a light in the handicapped bathroom on the
pier. Handicap parking along the beach should be free if you have parking plates.
There are many places to eat and stop at the H.B. Main Street pier. The Ruby’s
Restaurant at the pier didn’t have food prices on their portable menus. The ramp
on the pier is not accessible it’s too narrow. The ramp going to the beach is too
steep.
Overall Score 3.5
Picture Show Movie Theatres-Main Place Mall
Comments: The place was accessible for wheelchairs and walkers. The staff
was nice to all us. The place is clean.
Overall Score 3
Costa Mesa Triangle Square
Comments: It’s big enough for wheelchair accessibility the movie theater is
accessible also. They need more businesses that open earlier.
Overall Score 5

Conclusion
I hope the Community Accessibility Project will be helpful as a resource for people
with disabilities and their family members and / or friends. The project provides
people with disabilities a list of suggestions of restaurants and recreation activities
that I hope will give better options that are accessible for them. Most of the
restaurants and recreational sites were accessible, the staff was friendly and parking
was adequate. However, there were a few sites that did not meet ADA compliance.
For example, there were not adequate disabled parking at the Huntington Beach
Pier and the customer service was poor at IHOP. Some variables that may have
influenced my findings may be the results from my fellow team members on outing
(that I did not attend) had little to no comments. Which means that there may have
been some issues, both positive and negative, that were not documented. I found
during my research that the City of Huntington should allow the parking lots front
of the be copied) to be free for people with placards. I am placing a blank survey
form (to recreation for anyone who like to survey their favorite restaurant or
recreation site that they like to frequent. This could be done for their own purposes
and information. I also hope that this information will be helpful to everyone. I
enjoyed conducting this project.
